THE SWINGING BRIDGE

The Winkley Bridge is the official name of what locals called The Swinging Bridge. It was built in 1912 by contractor Harry Churchill. It was the only crossing over the Little Red River available to automobiles and foot traffic for many years. It was closed to vehicular traffic in 1972. Prior to the construction of the Swinging Bridge, Greers Ferry was used to cross the river.

On October 28, 1989, a school field trip proved fatal when the class began swinging the bridge for fun. The bridge turned upside-down and almost 40 students found themselves in the icy low waters of the Little Red River. Tragically, five young students perished.

The Winkley Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places - officially delisted on August 11, 1999.

The bridge's dimensions were 450 feet long (550 feet overall) by 10 feet wide. Pictured above is the bridge in July 1988, the year before it collapsed.
